Best eSIM for Europe: one plan for many countries

How Europe eSIMs work across borders, which countries plans leave out, and how much data a multi-country trip needs.

Updated Nov 5, 2026

Regional plan or country plan?

A Europe plan covers dozens of countries on one eSIM and keeps working as you cross borders, with no new setup. It's the easy choice for a trip through several countries.

If you're staying in one country, compare a country plan too. It can be cheaper for the same data, and sometimes uses a better local network.

Check the country list

Every provider's Europe plan covers a different list. EU countries are almost always included. The differences are usually in:

  • The United Kingdom
  • Switzerland
  • Turkey
  • Balkan countries such as Serbia, Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Montenegro

If your route includes any of these, check the plan's country list before you buy, not after you cross the border.

Already have an EU SIM?

If your home SIM is from an EU country, EU "roam like at home" rules already let you use it across the EU, Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway at home prices, with fair-use limits. A travel eSIM is then mainly useful for countries outside those rules, such as Switzerland or the UK, or if your home plan has little data.

How much data you need

  • A city break of 3–5 days: 3–5 GB.
  • Two weeks across several countries: 10–20 GB.
  • Video calls, streaming or working from a laptop: an unlimited plan, after checking its daily limit.

How long the plan lasts

Europe plans usually last 7, 15 or 30 days. Pick one that covers your whole trip; a slightly bigger 30-day plan often costs little more than a 15-day one. If you'll be away longer, choose a provider that lets you top up the same eSIM.

Phone numbers and calls

Most travel eSIMs are data only. WhatsApp is the usual way to message and call across most of Europe, including restaurants and guesthouses. Keep your home SIM on, with data roaming off, to receive texts and bank codes.

Which plan to pick

  • One country: compare that country's plans with a Europe plan.
  • Several countries, all in the EU: a Europe plan with the data you need for the whole trip.
  • The UK, Switzerland, Turkey or the Balkans on your route: a Europe plan that lists those countries, or a separate country plan for them.

Quick answers

Will a Europe eSIM work in the UK? On many plans, yes, but not all. Check the country list.

Do I need to do anything when I cross a border? Usually not. The eSIM switches to a partner network in the new country by itself. If it doesn't, turn Airplane Mode on and off.

Will I get 5G? Only if the plan includes 5G in that country and your phone supports it. Otherwise you'll be on 4G, which is fine for everyday use.
